Why Niger Delta projects are being slowed down – Amaechi

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has said that threat to security was responsible for delay in completion of projects in Niger Delta region.

Amaechi who is the Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Completion of the East-West Road set up by the Federal government said contractors handling the construction of East West Road within the region fled their sites after failed attempts to kidnap expatriates.

The Transportation Minister was speaking when he led members of the Committee on inspection tour of sections of the road in Rivers State.

On the planned upgrade of the Eleme-Onne section of the East West Road, Amaechi noted that the Federal Government has proposed high quality construction of the roads in the region but needs the people to cooperate for the promises to be delivered.

“Federal government is committed to completing the East West road. The road has gone far, we drove from Benin to Port Harcourt and we did not see anywhere that has pothole. It means that the road is near completion.

“One problem especially in the Niger Delta region is threat to security. You see work in Lagos-Ibadan without police but in this part of the country, any small thing, people will run out to ask for compensation or demand for one thing or the other.

“It is either they are kidnapping you or shooting and the federal government will not wait for any zone to be developed before moving over to the other side,” he said.
