Women in Energy, Oil, and Gas (WEOG) Nigeria, Bayelsa State chapter, has taken a bold step in promoting STEM education by providing free internet access to students at Government Science and Technical College (GSTC), Swali. This initiative was part of its International Women’s Day celebration on April 3, 2025, themed “Collaborating with Bayelsa State STEM: Breaking the Barrier for a Sustainable Energy Future.”
The event, aimed at encouraging young girls to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), featured notable dignitaries, including Prof. Benjamin Okaba, President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC); Godwin Adagbo, Bayelsa State School Sports Coordinator representing the Honorable Commissioner for Education; and traditional leaders such as HRH Wilcore Seiyeja Job, Paramount Ruler of Swali. Also present were GSTC Principal Igbudu Pedro Dennis, ICT Head Mangiri Woyinmiebi, and members of WEOG.
A major revelation during the event was a survey showing that none of the female students had aspirations to become engineers, highlighting the deep-rooted gender gap in STEM fields.
Speaking to the students, Prof. Benjamin Okaba urged them to break stereotypes and embrace science and technology.
“The world is evolving, and women must be at the forefront of engineering and technological advancements. Do not limit yourselves—your contributions are needed to shape the future.”
State Director of WEOG, Mrs. Peculiar Junere Braboke, also shared a personal story of overcoming gender bias to secure an AGIP scholarship, emphasizing the importance of discipline, resilience, and focus.
“Many doubted me, but I proved them wrong. You too can rise above societal expectations. Stay focused on your dreams and never let anyone tell you otherwise.”
To support digital learning, WEOG donated an MTN Wi-Fi router preloaded with 1.5 terabytes of data plus an additional 50GB, ensuring a year of uninterrupted internet access for GSTC’s ICT department.
Principal Igbudu Pedro Dennis described the donation as a game-changer for students, who often struggle with poor network connectivity.
“This will significantly improve our students’ access to online learning resources, boosting their performance in STEM education. We deeply appreciate WEOG’s support.”
The program concluded with students pledging to embrace STEM careers and take advantage of the digital opportunities now available to them.
