Delta State Commissioner for Transport, Mr Vincent Uduaghan, has re-affirmed the state government’s resolve to improve on the activities of the Riverine/Marine Transport sector of the state.
Mr. Uduaghan stated this in a meeting he held in company of the Permanent Secretary Directorate of Transport, Mr Edwin Abraka with a 7-man delegation from the National Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria(NMWUN) to address some issues of urgent importance and to strengthen the synergy between the government and the union in Delta State in his office.
The Commissioner stated, “there was the strong need to tackle some perceived illegal collection of monies from Riverine Transport Operators, without the knowledge of government by some organized economic saboteurs that have been arrested and charged to court”.
He further reiterated “All acts of illegalities and intimidation in any guise would not be accepted in the Riverine/Maritime transport environment of the State,” adding “we are open to peace but nobody is above the law.”
Earlier, Comrade Francis Bunu, one of the leaders that made up the 7-man delegate sent to the Directorate, disclosed that they were on a fact-finding mission due to the correspondence they received from the Directorate concerning some issues of illegal money collection perpetrated by some members of the state’s chapter of the Maritime Union.
Comrade Bunu emphasized that they would interface with the government in order to come up with ideas that would improve the security/safety in the waterways as well as create means of revenue generation that would benefit the government, union and host communities where they operate.
The Permanent Secretary, Directorate of Transport, Mr Edwin Abraka, commended the delegation for their swift intervention while calling for further meaningful cooperation from the union.
Present during the meeting were the Director of Maritime Transport, Engineer Victor Omoniyi and a Maritime Revenue Consultant, Engr. Lawrence Egogo.
