Members of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) have said that they had not reached any ceasefire agreement with the Federal Government.
Members of the militant group have been claiming responsibilities for bombings of oil and gas facilities in the oil-rich Niger Delta Region.
The position of the militant group was coming on the heels of the expiration of two weeks ceasefire by the Federal Government to enter into discussion with critical stakeholders in the region to end the renewed hostilities.
In response to the ceasefire muted by the Federal Government, the presence of soldiers in the creeks were scaled down while search for the suspected militants was also reduced.
The two weeks ceasefire by government expired Tuesday, prompting followers of the Niger Delta Avengers to raise questions on reported renewal of the agreement.
NDA in a tweet Tuesday said there was no such agreement with Federal Government on any ceasefire.
It tweeted thus “The NDA High Command never remember having any agreement on ceasefire with the Nigeria Government”.
Speculation has been on since the visit by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu to the Niger Delta last week to talk to some critical stakeholders on ways out of the renewed militancy in the region.
During the visit, the Minister was reported to have met some elders, militant leaders and officials of the state government led by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa during which a compromise was said to have been reached.
Since that historic meeting with the Minister, there has been no bombing of oil and gas facilities prompting feelins in the region that a truce had been reached by both parties.
