South-South Development Bill: Maciver Applauds Tinubu, Akpabio, National Assembly

By Faith Madogwe

For decades, the South-South region of Nigeria has faced challenges such as environmental degradation, inadequate infrastructure, and economic disparities caused by oil exploration. In response to these long-standing concerns, the South-South Development Commission (SSDC) Bill was introduced to establish a body that would drive sustainable development and improve resource allocation in the region.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (APC, Cross River South), was unanimously passed by the Senate in 2024. It seeks to ensure equitable distribution of resources, tackle infrastructure deficits, and promote environmental restoration. Additionally, it guarantees funding through federal allocations and international partnerships, thereby reducing the region’s dependence on oil revenue.

On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the bill into law, marking a historic milestone in the region’s pursuit of economic justice and sustainable growth.

Following the enactment of the bill, Great Joshua Maciver, the Bayelsa State APC Deputy Governorship Candidate in the 2023 election, expressed profound gratitude to President Tinubu for making the South-South Development Commission a reality.

Describing the move as a landmark decision, Maciver stated: “Mr. President, this singular action has secured your place in history as a champion of fairness and justice for the long-suffering people of the South-South region. You have proven to be a man of your word.”

He also extended appreciation to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and members of the National Assembly for their roles in ensuring the bill’s passage.

“I also extend my gratitude to the President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly, His Excellency, Chief Godswill Akpabio, as well as the distinguished members of the National Assembly, for their selfless roles in ensuring the passage of this bill into law. Thank you for standing up for justice.”

Maciver further emphasized the importance of the newly established commission, noting that it will bring much-needed development and address the longstanding challenges faced by the region.

He concluded by praying for divine blessings upon the President and all those who played a role in the passage of the bill, expressing optimism that the newly created commission would usher in a new era of prosperity for the South-South region.
