Shell, NNPCL Boost NMU Infrastructure with New Student Hostel

The Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, Delta State, on Thursday, December 5, commissioned a modern 46-room students’ hostel donated by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The facility, which accommodates 96 students, marks a significant step forward in addressing the institution’s accommodation challenges in Kurutie campus.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Vice Chancellor of NMU, Prof. Emmanuel Adigio, expressed gratitude to SPDC and NNPC for their support. He described the facility as a timely intervention that will ease the university’s accommodation difficulties.

Mr. Igo Weli, GM Corporate Relations at SPDC, stated via a virtual platform that the donation reflects SPDC’s and NNPC’s commitment to supporting education and development in the Niger Delta. The hostel, he noted, is equipped with electricity, a water treatment plant, recreational spaces, and secure access controls.

The Chairman of Kurutie Community, Mr. Peter Wilson, commended SPDC and NNPC for their support and urged NMU management to ensure the facility is well-maintained.

Representing the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Hon. Peter Oviejitobor, reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting universities and praised SPDC and NNPC for their role in advancing education in the region.

The event was attended by senior NMU officials, including Deputy Vice Chancellors Prof. Innocent Ogwude and Prof. Tuaweri Johnny; the project contractor, Pastor Akpos Seimode, as well as other stakeholders, marking another milestone in the university’s development.
