The Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ), has called on the Federal Government and the military in particular to imbibe the culture of respecting the rights of citizens.
CEPEJ stated this recently at her 8th Annual Conference which had as its theme; ‘Sustainable Security & Environment in the Niger Delta: A Key to Nigerian Development’, held at the Banquet Hall, University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State.
Speaking at the occasion, CEPEJ National Coordinator, Comr. Sheriff Mulade stated that the military should learn to respect the rights of citizens and must treat the civilian population with respect.
In his words, “The military knows that applying force in a period of crisis can only escalate the conflicts and create more disaffection between the military and the civil populace.”
He, therefore, opined that learning how to solve disputes without aggression is a great way to enjoy peace.
“We can collectively or individually sponsor activities and actions that promote environmental justice, clean environment, enhanced security and culture of peace,” Mulade added.
Also, the Chairman of Egbema Gbaramatu Communities Development Foundation (EGCDF), Comr. Jude Ukori in his goodwill message noted that, “EGCDF partnership with CEPEJ for the past few years has been of astounding success.”
He further explained that this year’s conference will be graced by a collaboration of experts across the country who by virtue of creative thinking and expertise will proffer possible solutions to avert catastrophes in the communities.
The lead paper for the conference was presented by Gen. Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, Chief of Defence Staff; while the conference was chaired by Prof. F. F. O. Orumwese, FNSE, the Vice Chancellor, University of Benin, Edo State.
