The Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, His Majesty, Oboro-Gbaraun II, Aketekpe (Agadagba) has called on the Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, to recruit qualified indigenes of riverine communities to teach in the areas to solve the shortage of teachers.
The monarch made the call when the Chief Inspector of Education, Eze Ariwojo led his team to inspect Ebiabu Primary school in Kokodiagbene, built by the community.
According to the king, “Many upland teachers do not want to be posted to the creeks because of the terrain. This has led to shortage of teachers. We have a lot of pupils in the schools but no teachers, so I call on the Governor to recruit qualified indigenes and deploy them to the creeks.”
In his welcome speech, the Acting Secretary of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Chief Godspower Gbenekama decried the attitude of government towards development of the riverine areas.
According to him, “Gbaramatu produce the wealth of the nation but the government does not care to develop the area. We love schools hence we are doing everything possible to ensure that we have schools here. Though, the government does not want our people to be schooled. There is no government presence here because we don’t have Senator, House of Representatives and House of Assembly members who speak for us. Any development you see here is the effort of few individuals who are fighting for our development.”
Responding, Eze Ariwojo, Chief Inspector of Education, Warri South West Council Area said he would convey the message of the people to his superiors at Asaba.
According to him: “I have heard a lot about Gbaramatu Kingdom but what I have seen is more than I hear. I want to assure you that I will report back to my boss in Asaba and he will act on it. I want to specifically commend the effort of Comrade Sheriff Mulade, Chairman, Kokodiagbene community for providing infrastructures for the school. I will ensure that they give the new school approval so that our children can have quality education.”
