President Tinubu Flags Off Construction of Section 3A of Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

The Federal Government on Monday flagged off the construction of Sections 3A and 3B of the 65-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway at Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, who performed the inauguration, was joined by Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the event.

Speaking during the ceremony, Umahi said the newly launched section is part of the larger 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, a flagship infrastructure project of the Tinubu administration. He noted that, like other sections, the Cross River stretch would be constructed using a continuous reinforced concrete pavement for durability.

Commending President Tinubu for his focus on infrastructure renewal, Umahi described the President as a national hero for daring to embark on a project of this magnitude.

“Only someone like Asiwaju can envision turning a deep forest like this into a modern city,” Umahi remarked. “We inherited an economy that was in shock—on oxygen—but the oxygen has now been removed. The worst is over. We are on a path to prosperity, and this project is a testament to that.”

He also appealed to communities along the corridor to cooperate fully with contractors to ensure smooth and timely delivery of the project.

“They move like lightning. If you cooperate with them, you’ll see magic,” he said.

Representing the President, Governor Otu echoed the economic significance of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, describing it as a vital enabler of national development.

“This project is not just about road construction. It is a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, regional integration, and cultural exchange,” the President said.

“As a responsive government, we are committed to creating an enabling environment for nano, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to thrive. Relevant agencies are prepared to offer soft loans, grants, expert guidance, and other incentives to support entrepreneurs.”

President Tinubu also spoke on the broader vision of self-sufficiency and economic independence for Nigeria.

“True independence must be backed by food sufficiency and the ability to shape our destiny. The structures we are laying today will leave a legacy that improves the lives of every Nigerian,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, the Federal Controller of Works in Cross River State, Engr. Olayinka Onafuye, assured that his office would ensure strict adherence to quality standards and project specifications throughout the construction period.
