The member representing Burutu Federal Constituency Rt. Hon.Julius Gbabojor Pondi have in pursuance of peace and security under his jurisdiction packaged a football tournament to boost sporting activities.
Disclosing this to Gbaramatu Voice Newspaper, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chairman, Comr. Emmanuel Gesikeme Akpule stated that “It is aimed at using football as a tool to promote peace and unity, engage youths, as well as to identify and develop local football talents in Burutu federal constituency. It is designed to see wards compete for honours.The 2016 edition will for the sake of sporting convenience have 16 (sixteen) teams from both federal and state wards”.
According to Gesikeme, he stressed that the tournament will be eventful as preparations are on to kick start the high powered football event in the Local Government Area noting that the competition will take place in three centres across the constituency, Burutu, Kiagbodo and Tuomo.
The LOC Chairman gave the breakdown of the competition as follows with particular respect to the football teams that are to participate in form of wards /communities
1.) Ward one – Torugbene
2.) Ward two – Tamigbe
3.) Ward three – Tuomo
4.) Ward four(1) – Okpokunou/Edegbene
5.) Ward four(2) – Oboro/Enekorogha
6.) Ward five – Ojobo
7.) Ward six(1) – Ndoro
8.) Ward six(2) – Ekogbene/Egrangbene
9.) Ward seven – Ayakoromo
10.) Ward Eight – Kiagbodo/Bikorogha
11.) Ward nine(1) – Egodor/ Agbodobiri
12.) Ward nine(2) – Gbekebor/Okrika
13.) Ward Ten(1) – Obotebe kingdom
14.) Ward Ten(2) – Burutu/Forcados
15.) Ward Eleven(1)- Ogulagha kingdom
16.) Ward Eleven(2) – Odimodi/ Ofougbene.
Emmanuel further explained that the Hon.Julius G Pondi Peace Cup 2016 is a football event for Youths, Footballers and football lovers of Burutu Federal constituency.
Commenting on the sport development, Comr. Joseph Perekebina Wurusibewei while speaking to our correspondent emphasized that the Burutu/Forcados team have commenced training as he expressed optimism that the performance of the players so far is encouraging and uses the medium to charge the players to put in their best in order not to disappoint the communities.
On his part, Comr. Victor Isereke, Chairman media committee to Pondi Peace Cup 2016 urged footballers across the Local Government Area to take advantage of the tournament as he reveals that the best players may be picked and integrated into national and international teams.
He explained that the competition will finally commence on October 22nd to end November 19th 2016 alleging that forms have been collected by the various teams through the Councilors representing the wards that constitutes the LGA.
Isereke, however, opine that the hosting of such football competition in the Local Government Area at this point is timely and indeed a welcome development as it will go a long way in promoting peace and boosting sports activities in the constituency stating that in recent times, the gesture is the first of its kind.
