Political Tensions Rise as Pro-Wike Faction Resumes Session in Rivers State House of Assembly

In a twist of events, the faction loyal to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reconvened in the early hours of Tuesday at the Rivers State House of Assembly, barely 24 hours after the factional Speaker, Hon. Eddison Ehie, narrowly escaped an alleged assassination attempt. The move further intensifies the already heightened political crisis in the state.

Despite the recent sealing of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex due to the ongoing crisis, Speaker Hon. Martins Amaeawhule and 24 other pro-Wike lawmakers successfully carried out legislative duties during the session.

To secure the Assembly complex, four police vans were stationed at its entrance, and there was a notable absence of vehicular and human movement around the Moscow road axis of Port Harcourt during the sitting.

During the session, lawmakers addressed two crucial matters: the suspension of the strike by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) and called on the police to prosecute those responsible for burning the chamber.

Following the proceedings, police officers promptly locked the entrance of the State House of Assembly complex, signaling a tense aftermath.
