The Special Adviser on Legislative, Plenary Matters and Political Affairs to the Deputy President of the Senate, Omeni Sobotie, was on Saturday, elected as the Chairman of the Delta State chapter of All Progressives Congress in Asaba.
Sobotie was elected at the party’s state congress to lead the 35-man executive committee to run the affairs of the party in the state.
The party officers were elected unopposed by affirmation through the voice votes of the accredited delegates drawn from the 25 local government areas of the state.
In attendance at the APC state congress were party chieftains, including Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Senate Committee Chairman on Niger Delta, Peter Nwaoboshi; a founding leader of the party in the state, Chief O’tega Emerhor; as well as the member representing Udu/Ughelli constituency in the House of Representatives, Francis Waive, among others.
But the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN),and others loyal to his camp were absent from the state congress.
The congress was conducted by the Chairman of the Delta State APC Congress Committee, Senator Ajibola Bashiru, leading six other members of the committee and it was observed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, amidst heavy presence of security operatives.
Addressing delegates, Bashiru said though the party offices were unopposed, paragraph six of the guidelines for the congress provided that there should be affirmative voting.
