Niger Delta Group Urges Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta governors to Provide Modern Market Boats for Riverine Communities

The 21st Century Youths of Niger Delta and Agitators with Conscience (21st CYNDAC) has called on the governors of Bayelsa, Rivers, and Delta States to urgently provide modern market boats for all riverine communities, citing the severe hardships faced by residents due to inadequate transportation options.

In a statement, the group’s Coordinator, Izon Ebi, emphasized the responsibility of state governments, as beneficiaries of the 13% oil derivation funds, to prioritize the welfare of riverine communities, which are most affected by the consequences of oil exploration. Ebi highlighted how fishermen and traders have been struggling with rising fuel costs and the lack of affordable transportation, further exacerbating their challenges.

The group argues that the recent increase in federal allocations and derivation funds should be used to provide modern boats and transportation vessels, which would help alleviate poverty, reduce crime, and create job opportunities in these neglected areas. They stressed that relying solely on federal palliatives is insufficient, urging state and local governments to take proactive steps in addressing the transportation crisis and the rising costs that have led to widespread poverty, hunger, and loss of lives in the region.
