Students and youths of Gbaramatu kingdom received awards of different categories at this year’s convention of National Association of Gbaramatu Students, NAGS.
The first category, a review of Lee Kuan Yew’s book “From Third World To First World: Singapore and The Asian Economic Boom”, was sponsored by Godfrey Pondi Book Club.
Godswill Wuruyai emerged the overall best reviewer winning One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (NGN150,000), while Fianka Diamond and Gift Ekpemupolo went home with One Hundred Thousand Naira (NGN100,000) and Fifty Thousand Naira (NGN50,000) respectively being the best runners in the book’s review competition.
At the second category was the Eddy P. Pondi Scholarship Scheme, where 3 students of higher institutions of learning were awarded NGN50,000 each.
According to Coordinator of the scheme, Victor Isereke, the scholarship for university students was to last for four years, NGN50, 000 each year, while those in Polytechnic was to last for two years.
Presenting the prizes to recipients on behalf of the sponsors, Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Hon. Jude Sinebe said he was surprised there are other individuals who compliment efforts of the government in the education sector.
According to him, until now he was of the view that government alone sponsors education, but with the efforts coming from Eddy Pondi Scholarship Scheme and Godfrey Pondi Book Club, he can authoritatively states that many individuals are making efforts to make sure an average Nigerian is educated.
The Commissioner thanked the donors for complementing government efforts in the education sector.
Reacting, some of the awardees expressed their delight and thanked Eddy P. Pondi Scholarship Scheme and Godfrey Pondi Book Club for the kind gesture.
This year’s convention also witnessed quiz amongst Gbraun Grammar School, Oporoza; Okerenkoko Secondary School, Okerenkoko; and Kokodiagbene Modern Secondary School, Kokodiagbene.
At the end of the quiz which covered Mathematics and General Studies, Kokodiagbene Modern Secondary School emerged the over all winner.
The convention witnessed influx of student leaders and students across the Niger Delta region.
