…Over 300 Students Have Commenced Academic Activities – Timipre Sylva
The Executive Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has described the commencement of academic activities at the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta state as a good development that will consolidate the existing peace in the Niger Delta region.
Governor Okowa stated this yesterday Tuesday (15th May, 2018) when the Governing Council of the University led by former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, paid him a courtesy visit in Asaba.
According to the elated Governor, commencement of academic activities in the Maritime University, Okerenkoko, will in no small means consolidate the peace in the Niger Delta.
In his words, “We are aware that the terrain is very difficult for the execution of projects and this is what the Governing Council will experience in defending its budget, the cost of executing projects in that area triples what it takes to execute similar projects in the upland.
The Governor further explained that his administration will continue to assist within their capacity to see to the smooth development of the university.
“The Maritime University is the first of its kind in Nigeria, we hope you (the Governing Council) develop it to internationally acceptable standards, he stated while congratulating Chief Sylva and members of the Governing Council for their appointments.
Responding, Chief Timipre Sylva, who is the Chairman, Governing Board of the University, told the Governor that the Governing Council was inaugurated on March 22, 2018 and commended Governor Okowa administration for its contributions to the development of the University so far.
Chief Sylva, finally hinted that the university has since commenced full-blown academic activities with over 300 students in various departments in the institution.
