…Acknowledges Contributions of Clark, Tompolo, Tonlagha, Other Niger Delta Leaders
The signing of the Bill for the Establishment of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been met with widespread jubilation across the Niger Delta.
Chief (Barr.) Bosin Ebikeme, the newly appointed Chairman of the Niger Delta Basin Development Authority (NDBDA), described the move as a landmark achievement that underscores the President’s commitment to the development of the region and his genuine care for its people.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, Chief Ebikeme described the signing of the bill as a “historic decision” and a demonstration of President Tinubu’s commitment to the development of the Niger Delta region.
“I, Chief (Barr.) Bosin Ebikeme, Chairman of the Niger Delta Basin Development Authority, wish to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his historic decision to sign into law the Bill for the Establishment of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko,” the statement read.
“This landmark achievement is a clear reflection of his steadfast commitment to the development of the Niger Delta region and his genuine care for its people.”
Chief Ebikeme also commended Senator Joel Onowakpo Thomas, who reintroduced the bill in 2023, stating that his efforts paved the way for the milestone achievement. “The signing of this bill into law on Monday, January 27, 2025, marks a new chapter of opportunity and progress for our region,” he noted.
The statement extended gratitude to the entire National Assembly for their collective support, with special recognition of Hon. Julius Pondi, Member Representing Burutu Federal Constituency, for playing a “crucial role at the forefront of this effort.”
He also thanked High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, and Mr. Matthew Tonlagha for their contributions. “For over 11 years, their selfless commitment, significant resources, and relentless efforts have been instrumental in ensuring the actualization of this dream,” Chief Ebikeme said. “Your contributions will forever be remembered as an integral part of this historic achievement.”
The Chairman further acknowledged the unwavering support of Ijaw national leader Chief Edwin Clark, as well as the fatherly guidance of His Royal Majesty, the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Oboro-Gbaraun II, Aketekpe, Agadagba.
He also recognized Senator James Manager for sponsoring the bill during his tenure in the Senate, noting that his foundational efforts laid the groundwork for its eventual success.
Additionally, Chief Ebikeme expressed his appreciation for High Chief Godspower Gbenekama JP, the Fiyewei of Gbaramatu Kingdom, and highlighted the steadfast roles played by His Excellency, Deacon (Barr.) Kingsley Otuaro, and Chief Barr. Fedude Zimughan. “Their steadfast support and commitment to the development of the Niger Delta were also instrumental in bringing this vision to fruition,” he remarked.
The Chairman extended his gratitude to all chiefs, stakeholders, and individuals whose contributions helped ensure the passage and signing of the bill.
“The establishment of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, is not just a victory for Gbaramatu Kingdom, but a significant milestone for the entire Niger Delta region,” he stated. “It symbolizes hope, growth, and the promise of a brighter future for our youth and communities.”
Chief Ebikeme concluded the statement by thanking President Tinubu once again for the “tremendous gift to the people of the Niger Delta.”
