In Wake of OKUAMA Tragedy, Otuaro Holds Talks with COAS Lagbaja in Abuja

Chief Dennis Otuaro, PhD, Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), met with Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, in Abuja on Thursday to address pressing security concerns in the Niger Delta region, following a recent tragic ambush on Nigerian troops in Okuama community, Ughelli South, Delta State, resulting in the death of 17 officers on March 14.

During the meeting, Chief Otuaro expressed heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian military for the losses suffered during the ambush and reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to collaborating closely with security forces to achieve sustainable peace and security in the Niger Delta region.

Addressing youth restiveness in the Niger Delta is a key priority for Chief Otuaro’s administration. Since assuming office, he has implemented a comprehensive engagement strategy, actively seeking input and collaboration from key stakeholders.

Notable among these engagements are meetings with prominent figures such as the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Defence, Alhaji Muhammed Badaru Abubakar; Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Muhammed Bello Matawalle; and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. Additionally, he recently met with former President Goodluck Jonathan to discuss strategies for promoting peace and development in the Niger Delta.

It’s noteworthy that President Bola Tinubu approved Otuaro’s appointment as administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Upon resuming office on March 18, he assured the people of Niger Delta that his leadership is not driven by personal gains and urged the staff to embrace his principle, promising to bring the programme closer to the people.
