Gbaramatu Kingdom has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Prince Dr. Phillip Tonfawei, a revered elder statesman and custodian of Ijaw heritage, who died at exactly 4:00AM on Friday, March 14, 2025, after a brief illness. Born in 1930, he lived a life deeply rooted in the preservation of Ijaw traditions and leadership.
Speaking exclusively to GbaramatuVoice, one of his daughters, Diana Tonfawei, revealed that she had rushed him to a hospital in Warri on Thursday, March 13, after noticing a decline in his health. Despite receiving medical attention, he was later discharged, but upon returning home in the early hours of the morning, he passed away.
Prince Tonfawei, whose lineage traces back to Kokodiagbene through his father and Benikrukru through his mother in Gbaramatu kingdom, Delta state, was a pillar of wisdom in Ijaw affairs. He was married to six wives, though only two survive him, alongside his 17 children. One of his children confirmed that the exact number of his grandchildren is yet to be determined.
Following the announcement of his passing, dignitaries, and community members have been visiting his residence at Okuisoko, Jakpa Road in Uvwie to pay their respects and console the bereaved family.
Reacting to the news, the Chairman of Benikrukru community, Comrade Joel Tonjoh, expressed his condolences, describing Prince Dr. Tonfawei as a father figure whose influence transcended generations.
“Prince Dr. Phillip Tonfawei was not just an elder; he was a library of wisdom. His knowledge of Ijaw traditions, leadership, and community values was unmatched. We have lost a rare gem, a leader whose contributions to the development of our people will never be forgotten. Benikrukru community mourns deeply, but we take solace in the legacy he leaves behind,” he stated.
As the Gbaramatu people prepare to bid their final farewell, funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
