From Church Drummer to Comedy Extraordinaire: The Remarkable Journey of MC Emmaralo

In the realm of comedy and event organization, the ascent of Emmanuel Debekeme, renowned as MC Emmaralo, serves as a testament to inspiration and unwavering dedication. His journey embarked amidst the rhythmic echoes of church drums, initially in the Redeem Christian Church of God (RCCG), eventually leading him on an unforeseen yet remarkable trajectory as a comedian and event organizer.

Hailing from the Ndoro community in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, MC Emmaralo has found his second home in Warri, Delta State. His academic journey led him to a degree in Mathematics Education, graduating from DELSU in 2007. But alongside the numbers, his heart belonged to comedy and fashion design, igniting a passion that has driven him since his birth on June 26, 1981.

As we eagerly anticipate the 11th edition of “Gospel Xplosion,” we were honored to conduct an exclusive interview with MC Emmaralo. This interview unveils the incredible metamorphosis from church-based events to the zenith of the comedy world, shedding light on the challenges he encountered and the transformative experiences that have molded him. Join us as we delve into the world of MC Emmaralo and explore the exciting prospects of the upcoming 11th Gospel Xplosion show in Lagos.

Please introduce yourself, and tell us how you got started in the world of comedy and events.

MC Emmaralo: My name is Emmanuel Debekeme, also known as MC Emmaralo. I began my journey in the world of comedy and events in my church, Redeem. Initially, I played the drums in the church and gained recognition for my drumming skills. After that, I was invited to the student chapel in Delta State University (DELSU), where I continued to showcase my talents.

Can you tell us more about your journey from church events to becoming a successful comedian and event organizer?

MC Emmaralo: Absolutely! From playing the drums in church, I expanded my involvement in events. I started playing drums at different fellowships and eventually joined the drama unit. As a Warri boy, my natural humor shone through when I talked at church events. This led to my involvement in events beyond the church setting.

In 2007, I graduated from DELSU with a degree in Mathematics Education. However, my passion for comedy and fashion design couldn’t be ignored. I decided to merge both worlds and founded ‘Emmaralo Exclusive Design.’ This venture allowed me to showcase my design skills by creating outfits for artists, a pursuit that garnered recognition in the industry. In 2007/2008, I served (NYSC) in Sokoto state, where I became known for my humor in the camp. This experience led to my first comedy show in Sokoto. The success of that show prompted me to continue organizing events.

I encountered challenges along the way, particularly financial difficulties. Organizing gospel events can be challenging because they don’t always have sponsors like secular events. Despite the challenges, I persevered and maintained valuable relationships.

It’s clear that you’ve had remarkable success with your comedy and events. Can you tell us more about your upcoming event, the 11th edition of Gospel Xplosion?

The guest speaker’s message on “The Power of Attitude” is expected to provide valuable spiritual insights.

Gospel events are known for their impact on the community. How do you see the upcoming show contributing to the spiritual and social well-being of the attendees?

MC Emmaralo: Gospel Xplosion contributes to the spiritual and social well-being of attendees by providing a platform for people to come together and experience the power of the gospel. Through comedy, music, and dance, people can find joy and laughter, which is essential for well-being. Organizing events like Gospel Xplosion can come with its challenges. What are some of the difficulties you’ve encountered, and how have you overcome them?

MC Emmaralo: One significant challenge in organizing events like Gospel Xplosion is financial constraints. Gospel events often lack sponsors compared to secular events. Financing an event, especially one with multiple artists and performers, can be challenging. Additionally, securing artists and ensuring their needs are met can be complicated.

To overcome these challenges, I’ve leaned on relationships I’ve built over the years. Good relationships can open doors that finances alone cannot. Support from friends and well-wishers has been crucial. In one instance, a video of our event caught someone’s attention, and they offered financial support. By maintaining relationships and receiving support from various individuals, we’ve been able to continue organizing Gospel Xplosion.
