From Amassoma to the World: The Remarkable Journey of Chief Mrs. Douyi Alalibo, Ph.D

On Saturday, June 8, 2024, the Ogboin-Tu Royal Palace in Ogbopina-Ama, Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, will host a grand celebration as Chief (Mrs.) Douyi Alalibo, Ph.D., is coronated as the Ebiagboro of Ogboin Clan by His Royal Majesty, King Oweipa Jones-Ere (JP), III, Ebenanaowei of Ogboin Clan. This significant event, commencing at 12 noon, highlights the extraordinary accomplishments of a woman who has excelled in education, professional life, and philanthropy.

A Journey Rooted in Amassoma

Born on July 5, 1974, at Ibenikiri Ama, Amassoma, Douyi Alalibo’s early life was shaped by her parents, the late Mr. Bolou Chronicle Sobai (Esq) and the late Mrs. Imomotimi Sobai nee Okorowanta. Her foundational education was at Army Children’s School GRA Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate in 1985, serving as Head Girl. Her academic journey continued at Government Secondary School Amassoma (GSSA), where she graduated in 1991, having earned her Senior WAEC in one sitting. Douyi was not only the Senior Prefect Girls but also an active member of Oboro House and the Drama Club.

Academic and Professional Excellence

Douyi’s quest for knowledge led her to Rivers State Polytechnic Bori, where she obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Accounting from 1994 to 1999. She furthered her education at the University of Nigeria Nsukka in 2000, earning a Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting. Her dedication to academic excellence culminated in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting from Rivers State University, specializing in Forensic Accounting and Fraud Management.

As a seasoned expert in internal auditing and control, Douyi has carved out a distinguished career. She holds numerous professional titles, including Chartered Nigerian Accountant (CNA), Member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (MNIM), Fellow of the Chartered Taxation Institute (FCTI), and Certified Forensic Accountant (CRFAC). Her roles as a technocrat, administrator, auditor, banker, devoted wife, loving mother, and caring daughter and sister showcase her multifaceted contributions to society.

Career Achievements and Contributions

Throughout her illustrious career, Douyi has attended various courses, authored and published journals both locally and internationally, and received numerous awards. She has held significant positions and served on several important committees at the Central Bank of Nigeria, where she currently serves as a Management Staff.

Philanthropy and Community Development

Beyond her professional achievements, Douyi is a dedicated philanthropist. In 2007, she founded the Ovolifina International Foundation, a non-governmental organization focused on women and youth empowerment. Through this foundation, she has sponsored and empowered numerous indigent persons, widows, and the elderly within her community and beyond. Additionally, she is the Founder and Chairman of the Goldrock Port Harcourt Multi-Purpose Cooperative.

Douyi’s silent yet impactful achievements have earned her recognition and honors. She was celebrated by the alumni of GSSA for being the first female student to earn a PhD in 50 years, a testament to her trailblazing efforts. The Amassoma Council of Chiefs also honored her with the chieftaincy title of Ere Pere 1 of Amassoma, recognizing her leadership and contributions.

Personal Life and Legacy

Douyi Alalibo is married to Chief (Hon) Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem, Ph.D., the current Resident Electoral Commissioner of Rivers State. Together, they are blessed with children. Her leadership, kindness, and transparency have made her an empathetic leader, widely respected and celebrated for her contributions to society.
