The Godfrey Pondi book club that was founded in 2015 with the core aim of inculcating reading habit among Ijaws with the intent of developing the human mind through books that will ultimately revamp the Ijaw Nation and reposition it academically through the reviews of high powered books written by World renowned figures began its first academic journey today.
It was an all academic affair at “Hotel the great” as the book club began its first edition of book review with Comrades . Emmanuel Gesikeme Akpule and Victor Isereke as coordinators of the programme which kick-starts it’s academic journey with the National Association of Ogulagha Clan Students (NAOCS).
The book entitled “FROM THIRD WORLD TO FIRST “. The Singapore Story written by Lee Kuan Yew, a former Prime Minister of Singapore was picked by the book club and presented to the students for review.
It is however of great importance that 9 students from NAOCS made entry and three out of them convincingly emerged winners by reviewing the book by adhering to the basic tenets of book reviewing.
Haven’t satisfied the Examiners, Comr. Emmanuel Gesikeme Akpule and Victor Isereke, bellow are the winners and their scores
•Comr. Welemu Williams First Price winner with 75 marks
•Miss. Tonghan Elizabeth Second Price winner with 71 marks
•Comr. Potoki Timipere Third Price winner with 61.
The first price winner was given a cheque of #150,000.00, second price #100,000,00 and third price was #50,000.00 respectively.
It was gathered that the next book review competition has been taken to Gbaramatu Kingdom as same book has been given to the Gbaramatu Students Association for review in three months time.
Reacting to the development, Comr. Freeborn Abraye, the Assistant Secretary to NAGS who spoke on behalf of the students thanked Godfrey Pondi for initiating such laudable platform geared toward developing the Ijaws academically and promised to do justice to the book when the coordinators must have called for the reviews in the stipulated time.
Also speaking was Comr. Oweikeye Path Endoro, on his part he appreciated the efforts of Godfrey Pondi for creating a distinct model for the Ijaws through books but charged participants to practice the good things that they have learnt through reading of the book while encouraging them not to throw away the habit of reading.
The vision of Godfrey Pondi Book club is to organise such competition across the entire nook and cranny of Ijaw land with the intention of bringing out the academic dexterity of Ijaw Students.
Speaking to Gbaramatu Voice Newspaper was Comr. Emmanuel, a coordinator of the book club, he said ” We decided to Choose Lee Kuan Yew’s book titled From Third World to First, because it talked so much about emancipation and the many obstacles and challenges embed in it, it was indeed a true story of how a single man played a major role in transforming Singapore to what it is today, in fact I recommend the book to all those that think well of our county, Niger Delta and Ijaw to read it ” he said.
The event was well attended by dignitaries, prominent among them was Barr. Oweilaemi, former Secretary to Burutu Local Government Area with the host of IYC leaders and Students Union leaders.
