Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has warned of a plot to disrupt the peace in the state, cautioning that the government will not tolerate any actions capable of causing unrest. He called on security agencies, youths, elders, and traditional rulers to remain vigilant.
Speaking at separate meetings with the Bayelsa Elders Council and during the 37th session of the state security council, Diri expressed concerns over a planned mega rally and the inauguration of a group loyal to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike. He described the event as a potential trigger for unnecessary conflict in the state.
The governor alleged that a suspended member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), George Turner, had been enlisted to create divisions within the party. He further warned that hosting such a gathering amid the heightened political crisis in Rivers State could escalate ethnic tensions and lead to instability in Bayelsa.
Diri emphasized that the alarm was necessary, citing past threats by the FCT minister to instigate crises in PDP-controlled states.
“Any attempt to import the Rivers State political crisis into Bayelsa will be resisted,” he declared.
The governor urged security commanders to remain alert and called on parents and traditional rulers to discourage their children and wards from being used to incite violence.
He further stressed that the peaceful nature of the Ijaw people should not be mistaken for weakness, vowing that Bayelsa would not allow any faceless group to destabilize the state, which he described as the homeland of all Ijaw people.
