There was uneasy calm in some parts of the Delta State today as the local government election turned violent, with the latest casualty being an ad hoc staff of the State Independent Electoral Commission, DSIEC, who was reportedly killed at the Onitsha-Aniocha North Local Government Area of the state.
GbaramatuVoice gathered that the man in his 30s was reportedly killed by suspected political thugs.
Contacted, however, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Andrew Aniamaka said the yet to be identified young man was not killed. He added that an autopsy would be carried out to ascertain the cause of death.
He said; “he was not killed rather, he slumped and died.”
A witness however, disagreed with the police Spokesman, saying that the man was violently killed.
”The police are just being economical with the truth. Why do they need an autopsy to determine his cause of death, if they are sure he was not violently killed?”.
Security has been beefed up around Ughelli, a volatile town, over fear of reprisal mob attacks over the burning of the local government secretariat by some armed hoodlums, who stormed the premises of the complex, shooting sporadically into the air and snatching voting materials.
