Following the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, a retired Vice Admiral and former Chief of Naval Staff, as the administrator of the state.
Tinubu made the announcement during his nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, citing the continued political crisis in Rivers and the failure of previous efforts to restore stability. He expressed deep concern over the unresolved tensions in the state, stating that decisive action was necessary to prevent further deterioration of governance and security.
Who is Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas?
Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas is a retired Vice Admiral who served as the 22nd Chief of Naval Staff of the Nigerian Navy from 2015 to 2021. Born on September 27, 1960, in Nko, Cross River State, he joined the Nigerian Defence Academy as part of the 26 Regular Course on June 20, 1979, and was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant on January 1, 1983.
