Bayelsa: Tension mounts in Gbaraun as JTF invades community

There is palpable fear, anxiety, and tension in Gbaraun town, headquarters of Gbaraun Kingdom in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, as the Joint Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta allegedly besieged the community today.

According to reports from the community, soldiers stormed the community in two gun boats at about 9am this morning.

The current invasion has led to residents of the town fleeing their homes on sighting the stern looking armed military men in the community in the fear of being attacked.

GbaramatuVoice also learnt from community source that the invasion is coming amidst the traditional activities marking the coronation of the new Pere of Gbaraun Kingdom, which they suspected could be the reason for the invasion as the security agents may have been wrongly tipped on the purpose of the gathering.

Presently, community women in their droves are protesting the siege by the soldiers, a situation they said is unacceptable as they call on the authorities concerned to prevail on the security agents to pull out immediately.

The JTF Spokesman has not replied to text message sent to his phone at the time of filing this report.

It could be recalled that the people of Gbaraun town are preparing for coronation ceremony of the new Pere of the kingdom come August 30th, 2018.
