Archbishop of Gbaramatu, Tonfawei, urges Niger Delta to stay strong amid national challenges

…Calls on Government to Ease Burden on Riverine Communities

Oporoza, Delta State – Amidst the growing economic and social challenges in Nigeria, Archbishop (Dr) Amb. Philip Tonfawei (JP), founder of Dominion Zion Ministry, also known as Land of Dominion, Fiafia Zion, Cherubim and Seraphim Church, has called upon the Ijaw nation and the entire Niger Delta to remain steadfast and resilient. He made this remark while speaking to the press on Sunday at the church headquarters in Oporoza, Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State, highlighting the urgent issues affecting both the region and the country as a whole.

The Archbishop’s message comes at a critical time when many across the Niger Delta are grappling with the effects of a worsening economic situation. Communities, particularly those in the riverine areas, have been hit hard by rising costs, which have severely impacted daily life and livelihoods. The Archbishop, a respected spiritual leader, emphasized the importance of unity, faith, and prayer as the region navigates these challenging times.

Drawing attention to the unique struggles faced by riverine communities, Archbishop Tonfawei pointed out the significant increase in transportation costs, which has led to a sharp rise in the price of essential goods, particularly foodstuffs. This situation has placed an additional burden on the already struggling fishermen and women who rely on these goods to sustain their families and communities.

“Even in the riverine areas, we feel the effects of the high cost of foodstuffs,” Archbishop Tonfawei explained. “Transportation costs have soared, making it difficult for our people, especially the fishermen and women, to continue their work and support their families. These challenges are not just numbers; they represent real hardships faced by our brothers and sisters daily.”

In light of these difficulties, the Archbishop made a strong appeal to the Delta state government, urging them to take immediate steps to alleviate the suffering of the people in these areas. He stressed the need for targeted interventions that would help cushion the impact of the economic downturn on these vulnerable communities.

“I call on the federal and state government to focus on the riverine areas and implement measures that will ease the burden of living for our people,” he advised. “The fishermen and women, who are the backbone of our communities, need support to overcome these challenges. It is essential that their struggles are recognized and addressed.”

Beyond the economic hardships, Archbishop Tonfawei also addressed the broader national issues, calling for peace and constructive dialogue in expressing grievances. He urged the citizens to remain prayerful and to seek peaceful means of resolving conflicts and presenting their concerns to the authorities.

“Let us continue to be prayerful and trust in God during these trying times,” he said. “Violence and unrest will only deepen our problems. We must present our cases peacefully and with dignity, knowing that through prayer and calm deliberation, we can find the solutions we seek.”
