All Eyes on Edo: Stage Set for Governorship Election

Today is D-Day for the Edo State governorship election, with 2.63 million registered voters ready to cast their ballots. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reports that the electorate is nearly evenly divided, with 52.11% male and 47.89% female voters.

Eighteen political parties are participating, but the main contenders are Senator Monday Okpebholo of the APC, Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party. Among the candidates, 17 are male and only 1 is female, while the deputy governorship race features 12 males and 6 females.

Youth and middle-aged voters are poised to play a crucial role in the election, as 37.4% of registered voters are aged 18 to 35, and 34.80% fall into the middle-aged category. Together, these groups represent a significant 72.2% of the electorate.

In contrast, voters aged 50 to 69 make up 20.17%, and those over 70 years account for 7.64%.

Security is also a pressing concern, with eight local government areas identified as potential hotspots for violence. Authorities will be on high alert to ensure a smooth electoral process as all eyes turn to Edo today.
