Following the recent violent attack that razed Akpata community in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State, leaders of the Ijaw settlement have reaffirmed that Akpata is historically and traditionally part of Gbaramatu Kingdom, dismissing ownership claims by the Itsekiri people of Omadino.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Prophet Israel J. Oluba, Chairman of Akpata community, stated, “Akpata was founded by our ancestor, Akpata himself. We are a recognized community under Gbaramatu Kingdom, and there is no dispute about that. The attack was unprovoked and rooted in false narratives.”
The community leaders condemned the invasion, which they alleged was carried out by armed youths from Omadino. The attack resulted in the destruction of homes, displacement of residents, and the reported abduction of two individuals — a man and a woman.
“We are calling on the leadership of Omadino to immediately release our people. The government must act swiftly to prevent a further breakdown of peace,” Oluba appealed.
In their statement, the leaders urged the Gbaramatu Youth Council and the wider Ijaw youth population to remain calm and allow the leadership and government to handle the matter through peaceful and lawful means.
They also urged the Gbaramatu Youth Council and the wider Ijaw youth population to remain calm and allow the leadership and government to handle the matter through peaceful and lawful means.
“Our youths are deeply angered by this incident, but we are appealing for restraint. The leadership is on top of the situation, and we trust that the government is working to ensure peace.”
They concluded by calling for justice, accountability, and dialogue to ensure long-term peace and stability in the region.
